10 Science Magazines to Check Out

Here in the United States, the holidays are upon us and for many of us, that means some time off to relax and recharge. For me, that means extra time to do some leisure reading and recently I have been gravitating toward magazines over books or journals. So, today I wanted to share ten science-related magazines that I enjoy.

Psychology Today

This magazine shares the latest news from the world of human behavior. The magazine examines psychology research and applies it to your everyday life making it both digestible and useful. The articles are informational and insightful, but avoid jargon so you do not need to be from the field to enjoy this publication. New issues are released bi-monthly.

National Geographic

National Geographic is a science and nature magazine that brings you stories from around the world about nature, history, and world cultures. The magazine is known for the stunning photography found within its pages which can make you feel as if you have been transported to a new place. The stories are also well researched and comprehensive. This magazine is published 12 times per year.

Science News

Science News was founded in 1921 as an independent, nonprofit source of information on the latest news of science, medicine, and technology. Today, the magazine’s mission remains the same and is published by the Society for Science & the Public, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) membership organization dedicated to public engagement in scientific research and education. The magazine publishes 22 issues per year so you always have lots of new content to look forward to.

Discover

Discover magazine reports the latest developments in science, medicine, and technology. Each issue features the latest news in the world of science, breakthroughs in health, medicine, and the mind, coverage of environmental issues and their relevance to daily life, and stories about cutting-edge technologies. There are also stories written by award-winning editors, opinion makers, Nobel laureates, and renegade scientists. New issues are released every other month.

MIT Technology Review

This bi-monthly, award-winning publication provides insight into emerging technology, innovation, and why it matters to you and your world. The magazine is owned by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology but is editorially independent. MIT Technology Review has also become well known for its annual Innovators Under 35 list.

Quanta Magazine

Quanta Magazine is published by the Simons Foundation to enhance public understanding of science. Their reporters focus on developments in mathematics, theoretical physics, theoretical computer science, and the basic life sciences. As a nonprofit foundation-funded publication, all of their resources go toward producing responsible, freely accessible journalism that is meticulously researched, reported, edited, copy-edited and fact-checked.

The New Scientist

New Scientist is a weekly science and technology magazine. It covers international news from a scientific standpoint and asks big-picture questions about life, the universe and what it means to be human. The magazine was founded in 1956 for “all those interested in scientific discovery and its social consequences” and has operated with that mission ever since.

Smithsonian

Smithsonian magazine places a Smithsonian lens on the world, looking at the topics and subject matters researched, studied and exhibited by the Smithsonian Institution including science, history, art, popular culture and innovation These topics are addressed on everyday terms for the publication’s diverse readership. Eleven issues are released each year.

Skeptic

Skeptic Magazine is a quarterly science education and science advocacy magazine published internationally by The Skeptics Society, a nonprofit organization devoted to promoting scientific skepticism and resisting the spread of pseudoscience, superstition, and irrational beliefs. Founded by Michael Shermer, founder of the Skeptics Society, the magazine was first published in the spring of 1992 and is published through Millennium Press.

Sky and Telescope

Sky & Telescope is a monthly magazine covering all aspects of amateur astronomy, including current events in astronomy and space exploration, reviews of astronomical equipment, books, and computer software, amateur telescope making, and astrophotography. The articles are intended for the informed lay reader and include detailed discussions of current discoveries, frequently by participating scientists.
